Mexico is close and easily accessible to the US. You can drive across to the border towns and experience the hassle to sell you something. A foreign language was required for college when I was in high school. My Spanish teacher instilled an interest in these countries. We went to Mexico as parents on my daughter's Spanish class trip. We visited the famed museums and night life of Mexico City. We toured Taxco, a hill town know for it silver craftsmen. Our last stop was the beach at Acapulco. We watched the cliff divers and tried para-sailing. Yucatan Peninsula: South of Cancun is Alkumal where we stayed in La Iguana Condominiums. Every morning we walked out on the beach and snorkeled around the corral watching the very colorful ocean fish. Then we made trips to Mayan ruins at Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza. We shopped in the local grocery store for breakfast goods. Dinner was at a local resturant. We visited and shopped in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Valladolid. There are many resorts in the Mayan Rivera with lots of activities. We swam with dolphins and snorkeled from a cenote to the ocean. We will return in 2008 on a Culinary tour of this area. Baja Peninsula is where grey whales give birth. We went on a Lindblad cruise to visit this area. This was a highly educational tour. We visited barrier islands, catus forrest, protected coves and the Sea of Cortez. A great way to learn about a country is on a cultural exchange. Rotary conducts these exchanges all over the world. I was the leader on one to Central Mexico. We spent 4 weeks living with Mexicans in there homes and learning about them. It is a wonderful experience. We visited in Mexico City, Toluca, Pachura and Morelia. |

| Myanmar '98 was a time to visit with our sister-in-law's family. The different culture was facinating. The government we obsered was a fickled dictatorship. In the fifties Asian flight went through Rangoon, now they are isolated by choice. They still deliver loads downtown on foot via bamboo poles. The week after we left, the government shut down all visitation to the country. | |||
